Marriage Advice

Monday, August 29, 2011

The first round of weddings begin this weekend when my best friend Ally, marries the love of her life Joe. I am so excited for them to start their married lives together! All this wedded bliss makes me think of my own wedding & marriage...

Here are a few things I have learned over the past 2 years of marriage:

~ Do not start doing something, unless you want to continue to do it
for the rest of your life
Example:  If you start doing his laundry, be prepared that he will expect you to keep doing his laundry.

~ Try not to live in a world of extremes: EVERY TIME, ALWAYS, NEVER...
Example: "You NEVER do what you say you're going to do!"
These statements are not only untrue, but will get you nowhere in the world of communication, & can very much hurt your spouses feelings.

~ Continue to be strong & independent from your spouse.
Example: do not let your spouse become everything in your world, because no matter if you think they are superman or woman, they will disappoint you. Its also not fair to hold them responsible for your happiness. Make your own happiness and they will want to join in!

This one is for the ladies
~ Men are simple. Not simple minded, just simple.
Example: When they say "I don't care where we eat." He isn't saying,  he doesn't care about spending time together or that he doesn't want to make the decision. He just honestly does not care about where to eat. He wants you to choose because he will love whatever you decide. Promise! And when they want to make a decision....don't worry, they will!

This one is for the guys
~ Sometimes we just want to talk!
Example: If we're upset or mad or frustrated, just talking it out is one of the best ways we release our anger. Let us talk about how were feeling (yes feelings, I know you don't get it, but just listen anyways) Most of the time after we talk, we feel better.

~ Men need Respect & Women need Love
Example: Give your husband respect, it is desperately what he needs & strives for, and in so doing, he will give you the Love that we so desperately need in return. If one need is not being met, the other will also fall short.

I hope some of the wisdom I have learned in my 2 short years of marriage will give you a giggle & help you in any of your relationships.

To my wonderful husband, Christopher -
"If I could choose again, I would still choose you"
I love you with all my heart.

Storm Season

Friday, August 26, 2011

Hurricane Irene is headed our way, and we are all waiting to see what kind of storm she is going to turn out to be. Growing up on the North Carolina coast, I am no stranger to powerful storms. I have gone through many, Bertha, Fran, Isabel, Floyd...just to name a few. We have been fortunate not to experience destruction like others have endured.

Living here in Virginia Beach I am not sure what to expect.  We are gonna ride out the storm prepared with our bottles of water, candles, flashlights, food, games, & wine...

Praying for safety for friends & family, from Wilmington, to Emerald Isle, to Virginia Beach...

Puppy Love

Thursday, August 25, 2011

My Lucy Love is about 2 and 1/2 years old, and my does time fly! It feels like yesterday that we picked her up & brought her home, into our hearts and lives..

Sleeping on Daddy's legs

First Bath

Socks & shoes are her favorite to chew on

First trip to the Vet

First time at the Beach

She loved it!

I love my four legged daughter to pieces! As silly as it may seem, she has taught me many things: love, faithfulness, patience, responsibility, playfulness....She really is a sweet blessing in my life. I know she is preparing me to be a great mom one day.

Fall in Love

“Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”
-Emily Bronte
Over the course of eight & a half years, Chris and I have accumulated hundreds of photographs taken of us together. But I would have to say, this is my favorite. Just a quick snapshot taken by my mom on a cool Fall day, we were unaware she even took it.  Such a beautiful photograph, one that I deeply Love & Cherish, just like the man I call my husband.

Weekend Warrior

Monday, August 22, 2011

With the end of the season drawing near, Chris & I have been trying to enjoy our first summer in Virginia Beach to the fullest! Taking full advantage of the amphitheater ,which is just few minutes down the road, Chris, David & I went to a great concert on Friday night! Night Ranger, Foreigner, & Journey!! All a little before our time, we were probably some of the youngest rockers there, but honestly, they don't make music like that anymore!

I got to see 2 of my favorite ladies at the concert!!

Journey!
Saturday evening we decided to use our Busch Gardens summer pass one more time before the pass expires. Luckily, the newest ride, Mach Tower, was finally open! We were pleasantly surprised at how fun this ride was!
Mach Tower

Chris looking up to see how high it goes!

David & I enjoying some ice cream!

The funny thing is these are the only fireworks we have seen all summer! We thoroughly enjoyed watching them after a fun evening at the park.

Such a great summer weekend, filled with great music, good friends, ice cream & fireworks!!

Changing

Friday, August 19, 2011

I have lived in Virginia Beach for a little over 5 months now,  not to say there haven't been difficult days(weeks), but this new city is starting to feel more & more like home. A North Carolina girl born & bread, making the leap over the border to Virginia has been the biggest change in my life, thus far. Leaving my job & friends that I loved dearly was a hard change, there is still sadness in my heart from leaving them...

Being a creature of habit, I do not do so well with change, but one of the most important things I have learned this year is change is the only constant in life! So, I am taking each day as it comes & finding the positives in everything, even change!

Not only have I changed locations, homes, jobs my taste in music & food has changed as well!! I am now a lover of 70's & 80's rock music!! I am addicted to Journey, Queen, the Eagels, Areosmith & more! I cannot get enough mushrooms, tomatoes, & jalepenos, all foods I used to turn my nose to!
Taking a lesson from these beautiful butterflies, I will find joy in change!

Tasty Memories

Monday, August 15, 2011

Isn't it amazing how certain tastes & smells can bring back some of your fondest memories?! My Grandma's Gooey Butter Cake, is one of my favorite desserts;  the sweet smell and creamy taste of gooey deliciousness brings back a flood of memories of my wonderful Grandma.
Here is her recipe:

Gooey Butter Cake
1 box yellow cake mix
3 eggs
1 stick melted butter
1 box powdered sugar (equivalent to 3 & 3/4 cups)
1 8oz cream cheese
1 tbsp four

Beat box of yellow cake mix, 1 egg & sick of melted butter, press down into greased 13x9 inch pan; dough will be stiff. Then mix together 2 eggs, powdered sugar, cream cheese, & four and pour on top of dough. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

A richly delicious dessert, enjoy with a glass of cold milk (for those who like it) or a hot cup of coffee. I am pleased to say mine turned out exactly like my Grandma's & with every sweet bite I remember her love, generosity, passion for cooking.

Birthday Festivites

Friday, August 12, 2011

In my family Birthdays have always been BIG! One of the most important days of the year, where it's all about you, on your special day! Here are some of the things we did to celebrate Chris' 25th Birthday!
I woke up early and make him breakfast! Eggs over-easy, bacon, & toast!
Much needed new shirts as his birthday gift from me & David got him his favorite beer, Guinness!

Why do I always make enough food to feed an army?? We had all Chris' favorites! Sushi, steak kabobs, fresh berries, cilantro bean dip, Parmesan pesto focaccia bread, & a big salad. And of course you can't forget the wine & beer. A smorgasbord of different foods, but it was all delicious!!
Homemade Happy Birthday card, made by me
Isn't it the best when you get to celebrate Birthday's with the ones you love!?!

Summer Reading: Part 2

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

On my last post about reading, I was right in the middle of "Barefoot" by Elin Hilderbrand. Since then I  finished "Barefoot" and absolutely fell in love Hilderband's writing style, her ease of  story line & complex but relate-able characters. Hilderbrand, nicknamed the "queen of the beach novel" has written over 10 novels, all set on the beautiful island of Nantucket.

I have been gobbling up her fantastic novels all summer, and I sincerely urge you to pick up one on your next trip to the bookstore. Here are some of my favorites:
"Silver Girl" is the latest novel by Elin Hilderbrand, which I just pick up yesterday. So if your looking, you'll know where to find me!

Wedding Hair

Monday, August 8, 2011

Tis the season for.....Weddings!! I am at the age where a lot of my friends are engaged & soon to be married, and I love it! This summer & fall I am in not only 1 but 2 weddings! And I will be attending at least one or two more. I am incredibly honored & excited to be a bridesmaid in both of my best friends weddings! So the dress for each wedding day is already set in place by the lovely brides (and I must say both dresses are simply darling) but what about the hair?!? Here are a few ideas on my do for the day...

So what do you think? I simply love them all!
