a few things to remember from our february --
+ visiting my best friend in raleigh and finally!! meeting her perfect baby boy!
+ my first fancy designer latte with the best biscuit of my life-- layered with pimento cheese and bacon, obviously
+ chia tea and reading books off my shelf
+ wine and cheese tray to celebrate friday, a favored tradition
+ blueberry almond power muffins, zucchini-turkey burgers, homemade spagetti sauce, and according to my husband too many things with chickpeas! --february eats
+ visit to the dog shelter ending with frozen yogurt instead of a puppy, biking down the boardwalk on a 75 sunny sunday, pizza and movies couch side, motorcycle ride and our favorite locals spot, spin classes together then refueling with sushi or chips and salsa! patio sitting and chatting the afternoon away before storm clouds rolled in-- february dates
+ logging miles.  short runs, long runs, ones outside or on the treadmill -- over 50 this month alone
+ the cutest little red heads as my date on Valentines night, my favorite way to celebrate
+ valentine roses and hearts on Starbucks cups-- sweet reminders of love on its holiday
+ just a dog and her hotdog costume, making us smile all winter long
+ ordering Chinese take-out on a monday night, his idea and what a treat it was
+ gym partners at last! spin classes together is only the beginning
+ the uncanny weather bringing an early spring to february, unlike i have ever seen

& something I would rather NOT remember from our february --
+ the worst case of poison ivy i have ever experienced.  irony in its simplest form, poison ivy in winter. ha.

making: each mile count.  half marathon training is both exhilarating and exhausting
eating: from the fridge/pantry/freezer more often and feeling quite frugal and creative if i do say so myself
drinking: chai tea and wondering why it has taken me so long
reading: eat, pray, love by Elizabeth Gilbert
listening: to Alan Jackson so much lately, excitely prepping for Texas and the rodeo
watching: the sun rise earlier and linger later and later each day now it seems
bookmarking: this skirt! because turning 30 should be celebrated with pink tulle and crisp champagne!
wanting: to jazz up my coffee table with a new tray, filled with books and candles and a soft rug underneath
looking: forward to our trip to Texas in a few weeks, hugging my mom and dad a few days before that, and spending a weekend with one of my best girlfriends even sooner! also friday- always looking forward to that.
enjoying: buying flowers for myself. african roses perched by the window but wanting to take them into each room i go
waiting: to become a mother.  such an unexpected journey i never imagined would be part of our story, alas such is life.
wondering: why i took a break from yoga at all?
loving: how passionate and inspired my husband is about his new gym membership -- how lucky of a girl I am to have married a man who is as unapologetically zealous with their passions as i. go big or go home is forever and always our style.
hoping: for a trip to the mountains this year and one to the beach while we're at it!
marveling: at how running is as equally a mental game as a physical one.  also, don't you dare think you will lose weight training for a race, don't you dare.
needing: to desperately do yard work on one of these beautiful february days.  also a chainsaw would be helpful.
wearing: his oversized sweaters on these cold winter nights in.  there is just something about wearing his clothing i find so cozy and romantic
smelling: nothing much at the moment, chris sweetly gave me his cold
noticing: birdsong and daffodils and hints of pink and green-- a fading winter is my favorite kind
knowing: this is it -- this is the year -- now to find the courage, to jump for it and chase that dream.
laughing: with him (or at him) is my forever favorite
thinking: i need to promptly get crackin' on this before 30 list i've created because....
daydreaming: together about our someday-- of small babes and who they will look like and where we will live; with a fenced in yard or on the water with a boat
wishing: i saw my family more.  i miss them so.
feeling: strong. encouraged. hopeful.

in praise of friendships and new babies

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

this past weekend I visited my oldest friend and met her new baby son! it was a weekend I've looked forward to long before it was penned on a calendar.

rejoicing in friendships and new babies is utterly something else, entirely.  it is powerful and beautiful seeing your oldest, dearest friend as a mother; it is emotional and no small amount of joy to hold her baby in your arms; he fell fast asleep tucked in my crook moments after we met.  i completely melted.  if i could bottle up his smell and giggles and moments from our days together I would, no price worthy to sell.

cooing and cuddling and sneaking head kisses when ever I could -- it is safe to say I am smitten with this little boy and miss him dearly already.  such an honor to be an aunt, to watch him grow and see what life he will lead -- bound not by blood but by love -- my tribe, so exciting to see it grow.

my best friend and i -- we were little girls together, teenagers together, & we are young women together.  now, as we enter different phases of life I am beyond proud and inspired by the women and mother she has become.  I am so so lucky to have her path to follow.

long lovely conversations over coffee and biscuits with bacon and pimento cheese & later with wine and popcorn -- we delighted in each other and soaked up every ounce of our time together.  it had been far too long since we we had done that and it filled me up so.

leaving was hard, but plans for the near future -- is a promise I'm dearly holding onto.

such the perfect weekend. nourished my heart and my spirit, ever grateful for days like these.  carry on winter, i'm recharged and embracing you.
